Sunsets and Skylines
After days spent anchored in close to shore to ride out a storm on Lake Michigan, the day came that the weather broke and gave us the opportunity to move further offshore and anchor again. This allowed us to stay close to the city but away from the afternoon boating traffic. This provided the opportunity as the clouds broke around the city to capture some stunning sunset pictures over the skyline of the city. This first image was captured just after the sun had set behind the buildings. It was shot with a Canon 70D, albeit an older camera it still captures amazing images. It was paired with a EF mount 100-400MM USM II lens. This was shot at 1/125th, F7.1, and ISO 250 at a focal length of 300MM.
This next shot was again captured with the Canon 70D and 100-400MM lens. This time it was shot at 1/125th, F16, and ISO 250 with a focal length of 400MM. It was just as the sun set well into the skyline.
This final image is showing a perfect 90 degree cutout of the sun caused by the buildings in the skyline. Due to the location of the sun it had to be shot a bit darker to keep from blowing the highlights out. This one was shot with the same camera and lens at 1/125th, F10, and ISO 100 at a focal length of 188MM.
It was quite spectacular to be able to see the setting sun over the skyline of Chicago. After days of riding out a storm the beauty the came from the end of the week was incredible. For those that have not been fortunate enough to see the sunset over Chicago I recommend it highly. There is plenty of opportunities to see it from Lake Michigan which really does give you the best view of the sunset.
